QUOTABLE QUOTES
Former pro football coach Bum Phillips, on what he does during retirement, "I ain't doing a damn thing, and I don't start until noon."
John Brodie, former San Francisco 49ers quarterback, when asked why a million-dollar QB has to hold the ball for field goals and extra points, "Well, if I didn't it would fall over."
Golfer Gene Sarazen, "When you talk turkey with a businessman, you must look squarely at him during the entire conversation. It's the same in putting."
IDLE THOUGHTS
The Detroit Tigers made baseball history when they cut loose Damion Easley. He became the most expensive player cut in baseball history. The Tigers released him with $14.3 million still owed on his contract. The 33-year-old second sacker is in his fourth season of a $29.9, five-year contract that pays him $6.5 million this year. The Tampa Bay Devil Rays recently signed him and only have to pay $300,000 of his salary. I would have kept Easley and made him earn his salary by carrying the luggage of all the Tiger players.
I see where Joe Eszterhaus is writing the script for 'The Ice Bowl.' I can't believe someone else hasn't beaten him to the punch. The film, which will not be released until mid-December, depicts the 1967 National Football League championship game between the Green Bay Packers and the Dallas Cowboys. Temperatures were minus-13 when the game started. The Packers ended up winning on a quarterback sneak by Bart Starr with 13 seconds left. If Leo 'Smokey' Boyd isn't doing anything, he would be a shoe-in for Packer coach Vince Lombardi.
Oh, have times changed. Back in 1991, the New York Yankees pitching staff managed only three complete games. Scott Sanderson went the distance twice and Tim Leary accounted for the other one. In 1983, Yankee hurler Ron Guidry led the American League with 21 complete games. The NY Yank's record? That happened back in 1904 when Jack Chesbro completed 48 of his 51 starts.
The lawsuit filed against the Michigan High School Athletic Association dealing with switching seasons for certain sports, is completely ridiculous. Not only do local high schools not have gym space now; there isn't enough officials/referees to go around either.
Could somebody explain to me what was with the uniforms Central Michigan University wore during the NCAA basketball tournament? Come on now, black? What the heck happened to the standard maroon and gold?
Ah, another golf season right around the corner. I better get busy and get my ball retriever re-gripped.
