QUOTABLE QUOTES
Leon Wood, introducing himself to TV announcer Steve Albert, "Are you any relation to your brother Marv?"
Former professional golfer Don Sikes, "When I come back in the next life, I want to come back as a golf pro's wife. She wakes up every morning at the crack of 10 and is faced by her first major decision of the day: whether to have breakfast in bed or in the hotel coffee shop."
Mike Marshall, former Minnesota Twins relief pitcher, on local fans who continually booed him, "If they worked as hard at their jobs as I do at mine, this country wouldn't have the inflation problem it now has."
IDLE THOUGHTS
The other day I read that the average Major League baseball player makes $2 million per year. Breaking it down for you and I . . . they make more in one game that most Americans make in one year.
In Germany, you can't get on a golf course unless you have a license. A license costs $1,000 and to receive one you have to complete a round of golf in no more than 108 strokes. I didn't want to play golf in Germany anyway.
Did you happen to see why Cleveland Indians' pitcher Chuck Finley missed his scheduled start against the Anaheim Angels? His wife, actress Tawny Kitaen attacked him, while the two were returning home from dinner. Kitaen, who was charged with spousal abuse and battery, was arrested when she attacked Finley when he was driving. She began kicking him with her high-heeled shoes in the thigh, leg and arm, and also grabbed and twisted his ear. Do you think he caught hell from his teammates? I wonder if Major League statistics guru Bill James will find room for Finley in his record book as being the first professional baseball player to be beaten up by his wife.
Jon Barry, one of the top reserves for the Detroit Pistons, played college ball at Georgia Tech where he teamed with Kenny Anderson (Boston), Travis Best (Indiana) and Matt Geiger (Philadelphia). That's a lot of firepower on one collegiate team. Barry comes from great genes. His father, of course, was the great Rick Barry, a former NBA All-Star with Golden State, a Hall of Fame inductee, and one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA history. His three brothers, Scooter (Germany), Brent (Seattle) and Drew, also played pro basketball. His grandfather, the late Bruce Hale, was a former coach of the Oakland Oaks, and his brother-in-law is pro golfer Billy Andrade.
When I was a kid I knew the starting lineup of every Major League baseball team. I probably know the names of 7-8 players on the entire Detroit Tigers' roster. I used to attend the Tiger Opener every year but it's kind of lost its luster.
Ron Monsen made the best of a bad situation. A top fisherman, the divorced angler turned his 10-karat gold diamond-studded wedding ring into a fishing lure. His friends probably rib him about the one that got away.
Saginaw received yet another black eye during Saginaw High's Class A semifinal basketball game against Pontiac Northern. A brawl broke out in the stands on the Trojans' side of Breslin Arena in East Lansing. The people in the fight were not Saginaw High students. I understand they were from rival gangs from Saginaw. Radio station 1330am out of Flint jumped all over the story and fielded telephone calls from around Michigan. People were calling in and saying that there are fights at nearly every Saginaw High game and that the Trojans have to play their football games in the afternoon because of all the trouble they have at their games. All this is untrue and I was a little upset after listening to the radio show. It's not just the city of Saginaw that gets a black-eye because of this . . . it's the entire county.
The $20,000 question? Who will be the No. 1 draft-pick of the Detroit Lions? They aren't leaning this way but I'd select Joey Harrington of Oregon. That would give the Lions something to build around. They'll probably blow it once again and pull another Lynn Boden out of their hat.
Bumper Sticker: I just got a gun for my wife. It's the best trade I ever made.
Whatever happened to Walt Bellamy?
