Theodore Roethke Poetry & Art Festival

Poetry Slam - Friday, March 17, 6:30-9 p.m. Marshall Fredericks Sculpture Museum (SVSU). Participate in a poetry slam open to adults, college students, and high school students. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three winners. Live music and refreshments will be provided. Sat., March 18, Roethke Home Tours and Poetry Reading from10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Theodore Roethke Home Museum (1805 Gratiot, Saginaw) Visit the home of Theodore Roethke and receive a guided tour of the house. 2-3:30 p.m. Join the River Junction Poets at the Roethke Home as they read some of their original work and discuss the significance of Roethke’s influence on our region’s longest established poetry group. Sunday, Mar. 19, Ted (Roethke) Talk and Brew from 6-8 p.m. at Oracle Brewing (122 N. Michigan Ave., Saginaw) Writer Jeff Vande Zande will speak on “Theodore Roethke: Facing the Dragon: How Roethke Epitomizes Nietzche’s Journey of the Artist.” Three special craft beers related to Roethke’s poems will be available for purchase. Mon., Mar. 20, Concert Band Tribute to Roethke at 7:30 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church (805 Center Ave., Bay City) The SVSU Concert Band and the Bay City Western Concert Band will perform a special musical tribute to Roethke. Weds., Mar. 22, Jazz and Poetry at the Live Oak from 7-9 p.m. Live Oak Coffeehouse (711 Ashman Street, Midland). Additional Events: The Melvin J. Zahnow Library (SVSU) will feature a Roethke display in the Roberta Allen Reading Room, located on the fourth floor of the Zahnow Library, during the month of March. Tuesday, March 21 • 7-8:30 p.m. Roehtke Memoril Poetry Prize Winner Presentation at the Rhea Miller Recital Hall (SVSU). Join us in honoring Patricia Jabbeh Wesley, the 2022 winner of the Roethke Memorial Prize for Poetry, for her book of collected poems Praise Song for My Children: New and Collected Poems.
