To paraphrase the state of the burgeoning cannabis industry in Bay City and the surrounding areas, the buds are rising to the top while the shake settles at the bottom. The “buds” in this case are the operations that are scaling intelligently as prices shift downward to accommodate the glut of healthy competition. Conversely, the “shake” in this scenario represents the brands that have had to scale back overly ambitious growth plans by closing stores.
In April 2021, Skymint Brands and Innovative Industrial Properties (the latter a real-estate investment trust specializing in buildings used by the cannabis industry) bought property near Lansing for its major growing, processing, and fulfillment location. The $15.6 million, 175,000 square foot building represented a major investment for a company with designs on occupying a sizable chunk of the market. Two years later, both of Skymint’s Bay City locations have closed, and in March, Green Peak Industries, Skymint’s parent company, was sued by a lender claiming $127 million in unpaid debt.
At the other end of the spectrum, the stand-alone, independent shops have carved out their own modest niche, proving – for the time-being at least, that “David” may not be able to take down the “Goliath” cannabis brands grabbing the headlines, but they are holding their own. Dispensaries like The Dime Shop in the South End and Native Son on the West Side are finding loyal customers as they celebrate a year in business this spring.
Meanwhile, as the grocery bill continues to creep upwards, Michigan residents can console themselves with $2 pre-rolls and $15 eighths, if they pay attention. And as our growing list attests, the options abound as more territories become receptive to the handsome tax revenues recouped from collected sales tax. Add Sanford to that list, as its residents recently approved the town’s first cannabis dispensary, with construction starting this spring.
