With just five games remaining in the 2017-18 Ontario Hockey League regular season, the Saginaw Spirit (29-26-8-0) moved into the sixth playoff slot with a 3-0 shutout victory over the Guelph Storm at the Sleeman Centre in Guelph, ON Friday night.
Spirit goal tender Evan Cormier (a fourth round pick of the New Jersey Devils in the 2016 NHL draft) turned away all 32 Guelph shots on goal to earn his third shutout (ninth of his career) of the year.
The Spirit jumped out to an early lead midway through the opening period when Marcus Crawford (13) scored his thirteenth goal of the season from Danny Katic and Aidan Prueter for a 1-0 lead at 10:07 of the first period.
After a scoreless second period, Spirit rookie sensation Blade Jenkins (20) scored an empty net goal with assists coming from D.J. Busdeker and Max Grondin for a 2-0 lead at the 18:00 mark of the third period.
The Spirit would add another empty net goal when Mason Kohn (18) found the back of the net with assists from Cole Coskey and Damien Giroux for a 3-0 lead at 18:27 of the final period.
Saginaw will look to gain some ground on the fifth place Owen Sound Attack with a road visit to the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre for a 7:30 pm face off in Owen Sound, ON tonight.
