Saginaw, MI:

The Saginaw Spirit (1-2-1-0) dropped a heart-wrenching  6-4 decision to division rivals the Soo Greyhounds in front of 4,695 at the Dow Event Center Saturday night.

The Greyhounds managed to jump out to an early 1-0 lead when Zack Trott (3) scored at 5:52 of the first, which was followed by another Greyhounds goal midway through the opening frame when Tye Kartye (2) scored his second of the season to give the hounds a 2-0 lead at the 10:11 mark of the first period.

Saginaw answered just past the midway mark of the first when rookie Josh Bloom (1) beat Soo goal tender Christian Propp on a penalty shot for his first career Ontario Hockey League goal, cutting the Soo lead to 2-1 at 12:34 of the first period, which led to Saginaw veteran Danny Katic (1) scoring his first goal of the season from Cole Coskey and Camryn Baber to tie the game at 2-goals apiece at 13:56 of the first period.

The Spirit pulled ahead later in the first, taking advantage of a late Soo penalty when Saginaw captain Damien Giroux (3) banged home a rebound for a power play goal with assists coming from Coskey and Spirit defenseman Ilya Solovyov at the 17:27 mark, giving the Spirit a 3-2 lead heading into the first intermission.

Sault Ste. Marie was whistled for another penalty just before the end of the opening period, but Hounds' forward Cole MacKay (3) managed to steal the puck at center ice early in the middle frame, out-striding a Spirit defender then scoring a shorthanded goal to tie things up at 3-goals apiece at 1:06 of the second period.

The Soo added three more unanswered goals in the final frame when Robert Calisti (1) and Alex Johnston (1) each lit the lamp for a 5-3 lead midway through the third, while Soo forward Rory Kerins (3) sealed the Saginaw fate with a power play goal, giving the Hounds a 6-3 lead at 11:05 of the third period.

Giroux (4) was able to bang home his second of the night on another greasy rebound goal with assists coming from Cole Perfetti and Solovyov to cut the Soo lead to 6-4 at 19:46 of the final frame.

Spirit goal tender Tristan Lennox stopped 27 of the 33 shots he saw in net for Saginaw, while his counterpart Propp turned away 29 of the 33 shots he would see between the pipes for the Soo.

The Spirit will round out the weekend, welcoming the Niagara Ice Dogs for a 5:30 pm game at the Dow Event Center later this evening.
