Saginaw Spirit 2018 first round Canadian Hockey League import draft pick Ivan Prosvetov (a 19-year old goal tender from Moscow, Russia) will represent his home country in game-3 of the 2018 CHL CIBC Canada/Russia Series on Thursday Nov. 8, at the Progressive Auto Sales Arena in Sarnia, ON at 7 pm next week.
The CIBC Canada/Russia Series (previously known as the Subway Super Series, the ADT Canada/Russia Challenge, and the RE/MAX Canada/Russia Challenge) is an annual (since 2003) junior hockey (under-20) exhibition tournament consisting of six games between a select team from the Russian Ice Hockey Federation and all star team's from each of the three leagues that make up the CHL; with the Russian select team playing (two games each) against the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, the Western Hockey League, and the Ontario Hockey League (Nov. 5-15) at various CHL arena's.
Prosvetov, a 6-foot-5, 175-pound goal tender who moved to the United States three years ago, where he played for the Minnesota Magicians in the North American Hockey League during the 2016-17 season, before leading the Youngstown Phantoms to the 2017-18 United States Hockey League finals last year, which led to his selection by the Arizona Coyotes in the fourth round of the 2018 NHL draft this summer prior to joining the Spirit.
The tournament will give the Canadian and Russian national teams a chance to see prospective players when deciding on who will represent their respective country at the 2019 International Ice Hockey Federation U-20 World Juniors Championship, which will be held in Vancouver and Victoria, British Columbia this winter.
Russia will open the tournament against all star's from the WHL on Monday Nov. 5, with a 7 pm (PST) face off at the Sandman Centre in Kamloops, BC, and will take on the WHL all star's again on Tue Nov. 6, with a 7 pm (PST) face off at the Langley Events Centre in Langley, BC near Vancouver, before Prosvetov joins the Russian team to take on the OHL all star's Thursday night for a 7 pm face off at the Progressive Auto Sales Arena in Sarnia, ON, which will give him enough time to make it back to Saginaw when the Spirit host the Mississauga Steelheads for a 7:05 pm face off at the Dow Event Center on Friday Nov. 9, the following night.
