The Saginaw Spirit dropped game 1 of their 2016 OHL playoff series against the Erie Otters 5-1 in front of 4,741 fans at the Erie Insurance Arena in Erie, PA last night.

The Otters completely dominated early on, allowing just 3 Saginaw shots on goal while scoring three first period goals and adding two more in the second period for a 5-0 lead heading into the third.

After Spirit left wing Blake Clarke was whistled for high sticking at 12:45 of the third period, Saginaw center Jesse Barwell managed to get his team on the board with a shorthanded goal at 14:02 of the third period. However, the damage had already been done.

The Erie defense managed to immobilize the Spirit allowing just 16 total shots on net; however, Otter goal tender (Saginaw native) Devin Williams was good when he needed to be, stopping 15 of the 16 shots he faced in between the pipes.

The Spirit will try to even the series when they take to the ice again at the Erie Insurance Arena for game two tonight.
