Saginaw, MI:

On Wednesday afternoon Saginaw Spirit GM Dave Drinkill announced the acquisition of third year goal tender Marshall Frappier following a trade with the Kingston Frontenacs in exchange for Saginaw's 10th round pick in the 2021 Ontario Hockey League priority selection draft.

The trade comes on the heels of the Arizona Coyotes' Sep. 22, announcement in which the Coyotes sent Saginaw's famous 'Cartwheeling' goal tender Ivan Prosvetov to Arizona's American Hockey League affiliate, the Tuscon Roadrunners, where the team will continue to evaluate the 20 year old Moscow native, before eventually deciding whether he is ready to make the jump to professional hockey or if he should be sent back to his junior team in Saginaw, with the former being great news for Ivan and the Coyotes, while the latter is something more beneficial for the Spirit and its fans.

Frappier, a 6-foot-1, 185-pound goal tender who was drafted by the Sudbury Wolves in the sixth round of the 2017 OHL priority selection draft had a 4.69 goals against average and an .871 save percentage in 22-games with the Wolves during the 2017-18 season, before being traded to Kingston the following year, posting a 4.67 GAA and an .867 save percentage through 19-games with the Frontenacs last year.

The Ottawa, ON native will compete with Saginaw's 2017 fourteenth round pick Carter Tahk to become the backup to current Spirit starter Tristan Lennox (a second round pick of the Spirit in the 2018 OHL priority selection draft) however, if Prosvetov does not manage to make the Tuscon roster he could still get sent back to Saginaw; creating a situation in which Frappier would likely find himself behind both Prosvetov and Lennox on the Spirit depth chart.

Wednesday's move would be the second goal tender trade in less than a week for Saginaw after the acquisition of overage netminder Nick Donofrio from the Hamilton Bulldogs just seven days ago, however, with the acquisition of Frappier yesterday (along with an abundance of overage players in Saginaw) Donofrio no longer appears on the Saginaw roster.

After a forgettable (0-1-1-0) start to the 2019-20 OHL season in which the Spirit suffered a 5-4 OT road loss to the Kitchener Rangers this past Friday night, followed by a 4-1 loss to the Flint Firebirds in the home opener on Saturday, the Spirit are looking to get things back on track with a trip across the Blue Water Bridge to take on the Sarnia Sting at the Progressive Auto Sales Arena in Sarnia, ON for a 7:05 pm face off this Friday night, before returning home for a 7:05 pm face off against the Soo Greyhounds at the Dow Event Center this Saturday night.
