QUOTABLE QUOTES

Sportswriter Edward T. Murphy, on the hapless Brooklyn baseball team of the 1930's, "Overconfidence may cost the Dodgers sixth place."

Bill Russell, former Boston Celtics great, on why he worries about the future of the NBA, "Mainly because I got a pension coming."

IDLE THOUGHTS

By scheduling the three military academies, Notre Dame has the weakest football schedule it has had in decades. The Fighting Irish will play Army, Navy and the Air Force Academy in 2006. They do have an open date on their schedule. Maybe they should add the Coast Guard?

I'm a stirrup man. When I was growing up, Major League baseball players wore long, white sanitary socks with long, thin stirrups placed over the top. Today, most baseball players don't wear any stirrups and have their baseball pants reach the tip of their shoes. To me, they resemble pajama bottoms. Only a handful of Detroit Tigers (Brandon Inge and Chris Shelton) wear their stirrups fully exposed. Please bring back stirrups!

Detroit boxing legend Thomas "Hitman" Hearns is battling Ford Motor Credit Co. in court over a $153,205 custom-made vehicle. Ford Motor Credit Co. filed a lawsuit in Oakland Circuit Court against Hearns, seeking to repossess a 2000 Bentley Arnage that he purchased last September. According to the lawsuit, Hearns agreed to make 60 consecutive monthly payments of $2,553.43 on the British-made luxury vehicle but owes a balance of $89,486 and has hidden the vehicle. The complaint says Hearns has refused to surrender possession of the Bentley, one of a fleet of vehicles registered to the boxer. State records show Hearns also has a 2003 Hummer, a 2003 Ford Explorer, a 2000 Mercedes Benz-S-500, a 2001 Ford Explorer, a 2001 Mercedes Benz and a 1998 GMC. The lawsuit requests "immediate disclosure of the whereabouts of the vehicle."

Most people don't realize it but this could be the final time the Buick Open appears at Warwick Hills Golf and Country Club in Grand Blanc. Buick officials are in early negotiations with Warwick Hills for future tournament dates since the current contract expires August 6 - the final day of this year's tourney. It all boils down to the almighty dollar for the fine folks at Buick. The Pro Golfers Association and Buick Open have an agreement through 2010, but the question is where they will hold it?
