Nouvel CC boys hold on for 54-50 victory over St. Charles, as Lady Panthers roll past Lady Bulldogs 54-33 in TVC West double header sweep

Two Saginaw Nouvel CC varsity basketball teams pulled off a Tri Valley Conference West division sweep over St. Charles High School; with the NCC girls cruising to a 54-33 win in the opener, before the NCC boys followed with a 54-50 victory in the nightcap of a double-header inside the Bulldogs' gym in St. Charles, MI tonight.

Nouvel came out strong, led by senior point guard Michael Ehlman, who had 6-points and 4-rebounds in the opening quarter, while junior swingman Sam Buckingham added a pair of three's to give NCC a 15-7 lead in the first frame. 
 
St. Charles senior Tyler Gengler managed to keep the Bulldogs close with 8 first half points (6 in the second quarter) but NCC's “little-big-man” Chris Lemanek was just getting warmed up, dropping 7-points and pulling down 7-boards throughout the first 16-minutes for a 28-20 Panther lead heading into halftime. 
 
The Bulldogs' defense tightened up in the third quarter, holding the Panthers to just 3-field goals, while cutting the NCC lead to 38-33 heading into the final quarter. 
 
Gengler added another 8-points for the Bulldogs in the fourth, along with 6 fourth quarter points from St. Charles senior Curtis Pumford, keeping the game close down the stretch, but NCC would get 6-points in the fourth from junior Harry Dwan and another 4-points from sophomore Devin Smith, along with some crucial steals by Lemanek and NCC senior Josh Kuligowski to secure the win. 
 
Buckingham led the Panthers with 14-points, 3-rebounds, and 1-block, followed by Lemanek, who finished a point shy of a double-double with 9-points, 11-rebounds, 7-assists, and 3-steals, and Ehlman with 8-points, 5-rebounds, 3-assists, 1-steal, and 1-block. 
 
Dwan and Smith each added 6-points apiece respectively, while Kuligowski finished with 5-points, 4-rebounds, 5-assists, and 2-steals, followed by senior's T.J. Raedy (4-points) and Jonah Wright (1-point and 7-rebounds). 
 
The Bulldogs were led by Gengler, who finished with a game high 16-points and 7-rebounds, followed by senior Cody Whiren with 10-points and Pumford with 7-points, while St. Charles junior Cody Kostick added 4-points and 9-rebounds. 
 
 
Nouvel Girls-54 St. Charles Girls-33
 
Three super sophomore's and a pair of freshmen phenom's led a very young, but very talented Nouvel girls team past the Lady Bulldogs in the opener.
 
NCC sophomore Catherine Buko led the Lady Panthers with 13-points, 8-rebounds, and 3-steals, followed by freshman sensation Madison Looby, who added 11-points and 5-steals, along with fellow freshman Grace Chacon, chipping in with 7-points and 8-rebounds, while sophomore Emma Adelman filled up the stat sheet with 8-points, 4-rebounds, 2-assists, 1-steal, and 1-block. 
 
Nouvel sophomore Autumn Skowronski followed with 6-points, 6-rebounds, 1-assist, and 1-block, while senior Brianna Greene added 5-points, 7-rebounds, and 3-steals, as sophomore Isabelle Patel chipped in with 4-points and 2-steals. 
 
The Lady Bulldogs were led by sophomore Lindsey Pumford, who finished with 13-points, followed by senior's Shelby Grunas and Allison Duranso, who each had 4-points apiece respectively, while sophomore Addie Pahl, along with junior's Celine Whiren and Addison Stimac would round out the scoring with 3-points apiece respectively for St. Charles. 
 
St. Charles' (girls and boys) will next head to Ashley H.S. for a 7 pm tip off on Monday, while the NCC boys and Lady Panthers will both be off until Tue Jan 22, when they'll make the trip west on M-46 to take on the Ithaca Yellow Jackets, with the girls set to tip off at 6 pm tip in another TVC West double-header.
