The Michigan State Spartans, currently rated #11 in the country, were going to run over Utah State in their season opener. But No - on a clear, hot Friday night in East Lansing, M.S.U. had to fight from behind in the closing minutes to pull out the victory, 38-31.

Highlights for the Night:  Coach Mark Dantonio, who seldom smiles, was smiling for days at the start of the game.  Mark was a defensive back at South Carolina for 3 years (1976-1978).

MSU Quarterback Mark Lewerke was 23 of 33 for 287 yards and two touchdowns. Utah’s quarterback was just as good: 29 of 44 for 319 yards, but two interceptions.  With two minutes to go, MSU’s Connor Heyard scored his second touchdown to put the Spartan’s ahead.

With 1:15 on the clock MSU’s Joe Bachie tipped and intercepted a pass at midfield to end the game. Total yards: MSU 452 and Utah State 344. Cody White caught five passes for State with one touchdown and 70 total yards. Felton Davis III - the long-haired MSU senior made the catch of the game, which I was lucky enough to capture with my camera.
