As part of the season long Michigan Legends the Great Lakes Loons would bring to Dow Diamond to of the key stars from the 1979 NCAA National Championship team. Head Coach Jud Heathcote and star Greg Kelser would spend the evening at Dow Diamond signing autographs.
The 86 year old Head Coach would appear on the local radio broadcast and then spend about 1 1/2 hours signing autographs for over 200 fans at the Dow Diamond. He was warming greeted by many former Spartans and Spartan fans. He would sign everything that the fans would place in front of him. In talking with Heathcote's son who made the trip with him stated "That this would probably be the last promotional trip to Michigan because of the difficultly in traveling. "
The slick moving forward Greg Kelser would also sign everything from photos to books that the fans would bring along with them. He took the time to answer questions from the fans as they were moving through the autograph line. Kelser would also throw out the first pitch of the game. Both appeared on the Great Lakes Loons pre-game show and talked about the 1979 Championship season and their years at Michigan State University.
The legends from the MSU glory days were the final legends to visit Dow Diamond during the 2013 campaign. The highly popular promotion brings in stars from the past to share they times in the spotlight and talk to the Great Lakes Bay region sports fans. Can't wait until the 2014 season and see how they can top this. There is only a handful of games remaining in the 2013 season before the Midwest League playoffs begin. The Loons currently had a small lead in the race for the final playoff spot.
