The Great Lakes Loons (4-12) stopped the recent losing skid with a 5-0 shutout victory over the Fort Wayne Tincaps (San Diego Padres) at Dow Diamond tonight.
Loons LF Romer Cuadrado reached on a 1-out single, then scored on an RBI-single off the bat of red hot hitting Great Lakes first baseman Nick Yarnall (who is 8th in the MWL with a .360 batting avg.) for a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
The Loons added more runs in the next inning when 3B Brandon Montgomery reached on a fielding error, followed by a walk to second baseman Marcus Chiu, before catcher Ramon Rodriguez (1) belted a 3-run home run, his first of the season, for a 4-0 Loons lead in the bottom of the second.
Montgomery then led off the bottom of the fourth with a triple, and Chiu followed with a walk, before Montgomery was driven in on an RBI-single by Rodriguez for a 5-0 Loons lead.
Loons starter Jesus Vargas (2-0, 0.69 ERA) was brilliant, earning his second win of the season, after allowing just 3-hits and 1-walk, with 3-strikeouts through 5-scoreless innings.
Great Lakes reliever Dan Jagiello (3.86 ERA) followed Vargas, allowing just 1-hit and 2-walks, with 3-strikeouts through 2-scoreless innings of relief, while closer Aneurys Zabala (11.25 ERA) was perfect, with 2-strikeouts, getting the final 6-outs of the game to close out the eighth and ninth innings.
The Loons and Tincaps will be back at it again for game 3 of this 4 game series at 6:05 pm tomorrow evening at Dow Diamond.
