The Great Lakes Loons got some good pitching tonight from Andrew Sopko who went 5 innings and only allowed 1 earned run.   The Loons defeated the West Michigan Whitecaps 5-1 in front of a good sized Monday night crowd at Dow Diamond.   3, 359 fans attended Social Media night at the Dow and were treated with a win from the Loons.   Something that they have struggled with in the 2nd half of this Midwest League season.    The Loons are now trying to get on the right track with a week to go in the regular season.

Logan Landon was the hitting star for Great Lakes with 3 hits on the night.   But it was his 2 run Home Run in the bottom of the fifth inning were all the runs that the Loons would need for the win.   They did tack on 3 more runs in the 7th to have nice cushion for the balance of the game.   Matt Beaty and Nick Sell each would have 2 hits for the Loons on the evening.   Great Lakes still remain in last place in the Eastern Division of the Midwest League 2nd half standings at 27-35.

The Loons now have only 7 games remaining on their schedule all against either the Lansing Lugnuts and West Michigan Whitecaps to close out the 2015 season.   I think that manager Luis Matos would like the Loons to have a strong finish to prepare them for the 1st round of playoffs for the Midwest League.   Game number 1 is on Wednesday September 9, 2015 @ 7:00p.m. at Dow Diamond against the Lansing Lugnuts who won the 1st half of the season.    The next two games would be at Thomas Cooley Law Stadium in downtown Lansing on Thursday and Friday.   The 1st round of the playoffs is the best of three games.    The Loons will have the pressure on them to win the first game of the playoffs at home before going to Lansing for games 2 and 3.
