The Great Lakes Loons opened the home part of the 2014 season with a 8-4 win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels.   The day was filled with excitement in the downtown area with an Opening Day parade down Main Street that featured 3 bands and multiple floats in the 30 minute parade enjoyed by hundreds.

On a day where the weather was finally starting to warm up a bit and the sun was shining for the parade and Opening Day ceremonies at the Dow Diamond.   There was the additional excitement about the team itself  getting off to a 3-1 start over the Fort Wayne Tincaps.  The Loons returns with a new manager in former MLB player Bill Hasselman and 9 players who spent some time with the Loons in 2013.

Great Lakes jumped off to a quick 4-0 lead with a 2-run home run from Justin Chigbogu in the 2nd inning to right field.  The game got a little cool as the sun started to disappear behind the stands at Dow Diamond and a steady breeze from the north through the evening.   A good crowd of 2,827 fans were present on a cool evening.   It was the smallest opening day crowd in the Loons 8 year history.   The Great Lakes Loons play in the Class A Midwest League.

The Loons would build a 7-1 lead and then hang on to get out with a 8-4 after the Kernels rallied late in the game.   Loons starter Greg Harris would pitch a strong 5 innings with 6 strikeouts for great Loons debut.   The Loons move to 4-1 on the young season and seem to be scoring a good number of runs early on.   One could feel the excitement already in the early season.   One of the goals for the Loons is to win the Eastern Division of the Midwest League and advance the Championship Series.   It would be a nice addition to add 2014 Midwest League Champs to the flagpole in leftfield.
