The Detroit Tigers 2014 season came to a crash landing on Sunday afternoon at Comerica Park.  The Baltimore Orioles the Eastern Division champs defeated the Tigers 2-1 on a brisk but sunny day.   43,011 fans were at the ballpark which would turn out to be the last game of the 2014 season.

Detroit came into the season with very high hopes of returning to the World Series where they last played in 2013.   There were several breakdowns in the short American League Divisional Series that Detroit dropped to the Orioles in a 3 game sweep.

When the best hitting team in MLB only garners 2 hits through the first 8 innings it is tough to win games.  Detroit mounted a little rally in the 9th inning only to see a double play end the season.   David Price the starting pitcher threw a fine game.   His only blemish was a weak two run homer to Nelson Cruz that just cleared the fence in the right field corner.

The Tigers ended up with 4 hits on the day with 3 doubles and a single.   Ian Kinsler would go 1 for 12 in the Divisional Series.    The bullpen would be the glaring weakness in this series where they would give up 12 runs in the 8th inning of the first 2 games of the ALDS.    Also the Tigers ran the bases poorly and had a few injuries that really affected them in the short 3 game series.

There will have to be several things that need to be addressed by General Manager Dave Dombrowski in the off season.    A number of key player's contracts expired at the end of the game yesterday and will be signed if the Tigers will be making a run at their 5th consecutive Central Division title in 2015.     It was a tough day in downtown Detroit yesterday with the Detroit Lions playing right across the street and blowing a 14-0 lead and losing in the last seconds on a long field goal to the Buffalo Bills.
