The Circumference of a Garden is a maximalist dream about wandering through a garden. Bonnie Lalley’s work, much like nature, assembles vibrant color arrayed with bits of paper and detritus. These become flowers while torn pieces of gold foil are transformed into leaves. Imagine Van Gogh’s Irises multiplied infinitely and arrayed in every conceivable color. This is the botanical bloom in Lalley’s work. Through art history, large canvases like this were often reserved for male painters and rarely bore elements that some may deem decorative. Lalley’s work pushes against these conformities by maximizing the Still Life and producing an effect that the fecund canvas is still growing. One walk through her world will transform how you identify beauty from your own window. The Saginaw Art Museum. Visit SaginawArtMuseum.org for more info. Runs thru Nov. 18th.
