Matrix: Midland • Dr. Marcia Rieke

Posted in: Instructional

Visit Midland Center for the Arts for the MATRIX:MIDLAND presentation of Dr. Marcia Rieke. A leading expert in infrared technology and explorations of the Milky Way, Marcia J. Rieke is a Professor of Astronomy at the University of Arizona, and the principal investigator for the near-infrared camera (NIRCam) on the James Webb Space Telescope, which was launched into space in December of 2021. Because the universe is expanding, light from the earliest galaxies has been stretched, or “redshifted,” from visible light into infrared light. NIRCam will be able to visualize infrared light, making it essential to examine the early phases of star and galaxy formation and study the shapes and colors of distant galaxies. Dr. Rieke will talk about what it took to get NIRCam where it is today, and what we hope to learn from it. Don’t miss this fascinating discussion with an intrepid Midland native and space explorer! Learn more about this event and purchase tickets today at midlandcenter.org or by calling the ticket office at 989-631-5930. Starts at 7:30 PM.
