QUOTABLE QUOTES

“When I gave up a grand slam to Pete LaCock, I knew it was time to quit.” – Major League Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher Bob Gibson.

“The three important elements in hockey are the forecheck, the backcheck, and the paycheck.” – Former Buffalo Sabres center Gilbert Perreault.

“Baseball players are smarter than football players. How often do you see a baseball team penalized for too many men on the field?” – Former MLB player/Author Jim Bouton.

IDLE THOUGHTS

In the last 12 months, we’ve had two Tom Brady retirements and four Carlos Correa contract agreements. I found it ironic that Brady and Dr. Phil McGraw both retired on the same day. Brady is Pro Football’s Greatest of All Time, while Dr. Phil had the Greatest of All Time TV mustaches, with Tom Selleck coming in a close second while Sam Elliott was a distant third.

Last January, Louisiana State University named its basketball floor Dale Brown Court after the former Tigers basketball coach who won 448 games and reached two Final Fours while at LSU. But an upcoming vote will be held among LSU's Board of Supervisors on February 10th to adjust the name of the court to include former LSU women's basketball coach Sue Gunter. No disrespect to Gunter but if I was Dale Brown, I’d be a little more than miffed. Don’t have a ceremony for Brown one year and then bring in a gallon of white-out the next year to add another name. I liken it to winning a car with no engine in it.

Juan Marichal led Major League Baseball in wins (191) and shutouts (45) for the decade of the 1960s. During that time, he never received a single Cy Young Award vote.

Fan Graphs projected the 2023 Opening Day lineup and batting order for the Detroit Tigers:

  1. Rightfield – Austin Meadows
  2. Shortstop – Javier Baez
  3. Centerfield – Riley Greene
  4. Second Base – Jonathan Schoop
  5. Designated Hitter – Kerry Carpenter
  6. Catcher – Eric Haase
  7. Third Base – Nick Maton
  8. First Base – Spencer Torkelson
  9.  Leftfield – Akil Baddoo

As you probably noticed, the lineup doesn’t include future Hall of Famer Miguel Cabrera, who is calling it quits after this season. It seems as if they simply moved the fences in for a pinch hitter.

The food service director of a school district outside of Chicago is facing charges after investigators said she stole more than a million dollars’ worth of food from the district. Vera Liddell was the food service director for Harvey School District 152 for more than 10 years and was charged with theft and operating a criminal enterprise, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. Liddell was tasked with placing food orders with Gordon Food Services, a main supplier for the district. Prosecutors said that for the 19 months from July 2020 to February 2022, Liddell placed orders for chicken wings and billed the district but kept the food. The food was ordered and delivered during a time when students were being educated remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic and were not allowed to attend class inside school buildings. Prosecutors said that Liddell ordered more than 11,000 cases of chicken wings from the supplier and picked up the orders in a district cargo van, but never took the food to the school or gave it to students. That had the makings of one hell of a Super Bowl party.

Archibald C. Manning – better known as Arch Manning – had a rough start in his first week on the University of Texas campus. The early enrollee is well known as the son of Cooper Manning, the nephew of college and professional quarterback greats Peyton and Eli Manning, and the grandson of legendary Ole Miss quarterback Archie Manning. In his first week he lost his student I.D., which quickly made the rounds on social media in Austin and beyond. Duh.

I read that after Roberto Clemente’s plane went down, teammate Manny Sanguillen was not at the memorial service. He was diving off the coast of Puerto Rico trying to find Clemente’s body. Clemente was on his way to deliver relief supplies to Nicaragua following a devastating earthquake there a week earlier.

Blake Wheeler of the Winnipeg Jets ruptured a testicle after he was struck by a John Morrissey shot on December 15th. He finished the game anyway. Wheeler still has a way to go to out-do Gump Worsley for the toughest hockey player award. Worsley, a netminder, was knocked out cold by a slapshot. After being treated in the locker room with ice – and a Budweiser – he pronounced himself fit for the third period.

The duties of an assistant coach on a high school junior varsity basketball team are mostly teaching fundamentals of the game and you hope that maybe a few can take to the sport and jump through the ranks to the varsity squad. Arlisha Boykins, a 22-year-old assistant coach on the Churchland High School JV girls’ basketball team in Portsmouth, Virginia, took it a step further. When her team was down a player who was at a club tournament game out-of-town, Boykins impersonated a 13-year-old player. You may be wondering how a 22-year-old can pull off being a 13-year-old, but luckily there is video of the game and she doesn’t stick out as much as you’d expect — until you see her absolutely sending opponent’s shots away like Dikembe Mutombo and muscling through contact for and-1 finishes. She was, of course, removed from her position. The team has also decided not to play the rest of the season, which is a bummer for all of the kids.

Terry Bradshaw is downright awful. Please oh please do not let him participate in the Super Bowl trophy presentation.

The average lifespan of a Major League baseball is eight pitches. While umpiring a Little League game, I once used the same baseball for both games of a doubleheader.

I was watching a Los Angeles Lakers game recently when LeBron James drove to the rim for a last second shot. The shot was missed because James was hacked on the play. The referees, however, never called the obvious foul which sent the game into overtime. James, of course, threw a tantrum on the court. During the timeout prior to the start of overtime, James’ teammate Patrick Beverley trotted onto the court with a camera trying to show an official that James indeed got fouled. He was assessed a technical foul but allowed to stay in the game. I believe he should have been given at least a five-game suspension. Kids see that crap and no doubt will try to emulate his actions.

The Alma College football team announced it would be traveling overseas to play a game in Scotland in 2024. The Scots will take on the East Kilbride Pirates on April 27, 2024, in a game near Glasglow. The East Kilbride Pirates were established in 1985 and claim to be Scotland’s No. 1 American Football Club. It will be the first overseas trip for the program since the 1980s when Alma College played in Finland.

Former Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett's recent arrest for public intoxication could impact his upcoming 2023 NFL Draft stock and whether teams are willing to take a chance on a player with an off-the-field incident. Bennett reportedly was "banging on doors" on the 1600 block of Tribeca Way in Old East Dallas before he was found to be intoxicated by local police. Todd Shapiro, Bennett's attorney, said Bennett was trying to get into his friend's apartment. Bennett, who just won his second straight national title at Georgia, was already a Day 2 selection at best according to NFL insiders and chose to skip the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama, to work on his game privately before an upcoming combine appearance.

Legendary broadcaster Vin Scully once called a baseball game managed by Connie Mack (born in 1862) and also called a game pitched by Julio Urias (born in 1996).

I attended a recent boys’ varsity basketball game at Carrollton High School who were hosting Nouvel Catholic Central High School. The public address announcer twice asked that fans should wait for a break in the action before entering/exiting the bleachers. That, of course, fell on deaf ears. At least they tried.

The Canadian Hockey League announced that four Ontario Hockey League clubs have submitted intents to bid for the hosting rights of the 2024 Memorial Cup.. The Kingston Frontenacs, Niagara IceDogs, Soo Greyhounds, and our own Saginaw Spirit each submit their bids prior to the January 31 deadline, with the winning bid then announced in March 2023. “All of the OHL bidders are obviously historic franchises that will be outstanding hosts for the 2024 Memorial Cup,” said Craig Goslin, President and Managing Partner of the Saginaw Spirit. “In Saginaw, we feel that the opportunity to host is perfect timing.  In 2024, the Saginaw Spirit roster will be filled with championship quality talent. This will include exceptional status player Michael Misa, as he will be competing in his second OHL season. “We also have the right decision makers in the right places to support our bid with the state of Michigan, Saginaw County, City of Saginaw and throughout the Great Lakes Bay Region,” Goslin continued. “If the Saginaw Spirit were awarded the honor of hosting the 2024 Memorial Cup, we will do so with great respect for the tradition the event richly has earned and deserves. We feel confidently, together, we will be in a strong position to present a memorable Memorial Cup experience for the CHL, the teams and their communities.” If the Saginaw Spirit are awarded hosting rights, it is estimated the event will bring in between $20-$25 million dollars to the region.

Whatever happened to John Mengelt?

QUICK QUIZ ANSWER

B. Roger Maris. He attended Bishop Shanley High School High School in Fargo, North Dakota, and graduated in 1952. Maris played both baseball and football for the Shanley Deacons. He set a national high school record, which still stands, for most return touchdowns in a game, with four (two kickoff returns, one punt return, and one interception return). In that 1951 game, he also scored a fifth touchdown on a 32-yard run from scrimmage. Maris met his future wife, Patricia, in the 10th grade at a high school basketball game. He played with four MLB teams during a 12-year career, appearing in seven World Series, and winning three World Championships with two different teams.
