The Saginaw Spirit announced in an email press release Monday afternoon that GM Dave Drinkill had sent backup goal tender Brendan Bonello to the Kingston Frontenacs in exchange for Kingston's sixth round pick in the 2019 OHL priority selection draft.

Bonello, a native of Mississauga, ON was selected by the Spirit in the third round, 45 overall, of the 2015 OHL priority selection draft after growing up playing in the Toronto Titans' Triple-A program in the Greater Toronto Hockey League.

The 6-foot-2 goal tender saw action for the Spirit in 3 games as the third goalie (behind Evan Cormier and David Ovsjannikov) during the 2015-16 OHL season, before the Spirit sent him to its Ontario Junior Hockey League affiliate, the Toronto Jr. Canadiens in order to get some playing time for the remainder of the 2015-16 season.

The following year, Bonello beat out Saginaw's third round pick in the 2016 OHL priority selection draft, Cameron LaMour to become the primary backup behind Cormier for the 2016-17 OHL season, where he would go on to post an .856 save percentage, appearing in 21 games, while also earning his first career OHL victory (4-2) against the Guelph Storm on Nov. 28, last year.

In Kingston, Bonello will now have the opportunity to battle Frontenacs' 2015 seventh round pick Mario Peccia for the primary backup position behind starter Jeremy Helvig (a fifth round pick of the Carolina Hurricanes, 134 overall, in the 2016 NHL draft) who is currently in his fourth OHL season.

The Frontenacs' will be in action this Wednesday morning in Canada's capital for a 10:30 am 'School Day Game' against the Ottawa 67's, while the Spirit host the Flint Firebirds in the first 2017-18 meeting of the I-75 Divide Cup Series for a 7:05 pm face off at the Dow Event Center later that same night.
