Saginaw, MI:

After announcing the acquisition of Edmonton Oilers 2018 second round pick Ryan McLeod in a trade with the Mississauga Steelheads less than 48 hours ago, Saginaw Spirit GM Dave Drinkill has pulled the trigger on another deal for a big name forward from the Steelheads, bringing Florida Panthers' 2017 first round pick (tenth overall) Owen Tippett to Saginaw in a trade with Mississauga this morning.

“It has been an exciting 48 hours for the Saginaw Spirit organization and we are very pleased to be adding Owen Tippett to our team,” Drinkill said in a press release. “Owen is one of the best pure goal scorers not only in the OHL, but in all of junior hockey, and we feel we added a top-end, elite talent that can help produce a lot of goals down the stretch and into the playoffs.

“Tippett has a lethal shot with a quick release, and has the unique ability to score from anywhere in the offensive end. Adding Owen Tippett and Ryan McLeod this week has added two elite, offensive game-breakers to our already strong and deep group of forwards.”

In exchange for Tippett, the Spirit will send second year forward Aidan Prueter, along with a 2020 second round pick (Barrie), a 2021 second round pick (Sudbury), a 2019 third round pick (Sag), a 2020 third round pick (Sarnia), a 2019 seventh round pick (Sag), and a 2020 seventh round pick (Sag) to the Steelheads.

Tippett, a 6-foot-2, 204-pound forward from Peterborough, ON signed an NHL entry level contract with Florida in 2017 and began the 2017-18 season with the Panthers, where he scored his first NHL goal on Oct 27, 2017 against the Anaheim Ducks, before returning to Mississauga where he produced 75-points (36-goals, 39-assists) in 51 games last season.

Prueter will be another tough loss for Drinkill and the Spirit organization, as well as the Saginaw fan base, but the Steelheads' fans will welcome the gritty forward.

“Mississauga is getting a very good, young player in Aidan Prueter,” Drinkill said. “We know he will be successful with the Steelheads. As exciting as it is to add a player like Owen Tippett, it is equally as tough to move a player like Aidan Prueter. We wish him and his family all the best moving forward.”

Tippett is expected to be in the lineup for the Spirit when the Kitchener Rangers make a visit to the Dow Event Center for a 7:05 pm face off in downtown Saginaw tonight.
