Saginaw, MI:

The Saginaw Spirit (21-10-2-2) closed out 2019 extending its win streak to 6-games with a 3-1 victory over the Soo Greyhounds at the Dow Event Center in downtown Saginaw Monday night.

Spirit head coach Chris Lazary is appreciative to see his team stringing together wins in a conference loaded with great teams like the Soo.

“Guys are playing some of their best hockey right now at our most critical time and it was a grind,” Lazary said. “You know, I think we carried the play for most of the game, but the Soo though, they're so dangerous if you give them a half a chance it's a grade-A (scoring opportunity) but you know what, we found a way to win another game.”

The Spirit jumped out to an early lead in the opening frame when Cole Perfetti (21) scored on a feed from Cole Coskey for a 1-0 lead at 6:19 of the first period, but the Greyhounds would respond, taking advantage of a Saginaw penalty just a couple of minutes later when Soo defenseman Robert Calisti (11) scored on a power play to tie the game at 1-goal apiece at the 7:57 mark.

Following a scoreless second and with just under 2-minutes left in the third, Spirit forward Camaryn Baber took a pass from Dalton Duhart and fired a shot which was redirected by Ethan Cardwell (10) beating Soo goal tender Bailey Brkin for the eventual game winning goal at 17:53 of the third period, before Cardwell (11) added an empty net insurance goal with assists from Duhart and DJ King less than a minute later at the 18:47 mark to round out the scoring.

The Spirit will have a few days off before heading out to take on the Kitchener Rangers for a 7:30 road game at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium on Friday Jan 3, of next year.
