Saginaw Valley State University continued its winning ways by defeating the Northwood University Timberwolves in the 40th annual AXE BOWL played at Harvey Randall Wickes Stadium on Saturday night 44 -28.  This leaves Saginaw Valley alone in 1st place in the North Division of the GLIAC.

Northwood came out and stunned the crowd by jumping out to a 21-10 lead in the 1st half only to see the SVSU come roaring back and score the next 34 points to take a 44 - 21 lead late into the game.  The largest crowd of the season turned out at SVSU's Homecoming game under perfect weather.  The Cardinal defense tightened up and forced the Timberwolves to punt 5 times and throw 3 interceptions.

The Cardinal running attack was huge on the evening by gaining 356 yards on 52 rushes.  Norman Shufford (156 yards) and Mark Mays (121) lead the attack and All American candidate Jeff Janis hauling in another touchdown pass.  QB Jon Jennings had another strong showing against the pesky Timberwolves who just wouldn't go away.

With the victory the Cardinals now stand 5-1 overall and 5-0 in the GLIAC North Division.  The large date looming on the Cardinal calendar is November 16 in Allendale, Michigan against in state rival Grand Valley State University.  The Cardinals should not have much of a problem in the next four contests before that.  According to Head Coach Jim Collins the Cardinals goals are to win the GLIAC Championship and qualify for the NCAA Division II playoffs.
