Saginaw Valley State University coming off one of its finest seasons in history opened the 2014 season with some caution.   Athletic Director Mike Watson likes to schedule good competition for the Cardinals during its non-conference part of the schedule and the Indianapolis Greyhounds lived up to that billing.  The Greyhounds who finished the 2013 season with a 10-2 record and reached the NCAA Division II playoffs  provided the competition.

On a beautiful evening at Harvey Randell Wickes Stadium the 20th ranked Cardinals would host the 15th ranked Greyhounds in front of a large crowd.   Over 9,000 fans were in attendence with the student section overflowing onto the near-by hills at the North end zone.   The Greyhounds would race to a 10-7 lead at halftime with a strong running game that would eat up the clock in a fast played game that had few penalities.

The Cardinals minus two of the most prolific players in SVSU history now playing for NFL teams started a young line-up without much game experience.  However quarterback Keith Moore would lead the team in rushing and passing on the evening.  The Cardinals ended up dropping the contest 24-10 to the very solid Greyhounds.   The Cardinals lone score would come on a 5 yard pass to Leonte Degraffenreid in the first half.

Saginaw Valley State University had gleaming in the sunlight the new 22 million dollar indoor practice facalitiy directly across from Wickes Stadium.   This hopefully will assist Head Coach Jim Collins in recruiting more top notch athletes to Saginaw Valley.   The 2014 defending Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference champions will play Tiffin University next Saturday again under the lights at 7:00p.m. at Wickes Stadium.   The Cardinals have 6 home games this season with the first 5 games under the lights and the season finale against huge in-state rival Grand Valley State University on November 15th at 1:00p.m.
