Saginaw Valley State University defeats Wayne State University 24 -7

SVSU moves into 1st Place in GLIAC in nationally televised contest

Nationally ranked Saginaw Valley State University defeated #18 ranked Wayne State University on national television Thursday evening 24-7.  The Cardinals came into the contest ranked #17 in the latest NCAA Division II polls.   On a cool and rainy evening in front of a good crowd at Wickes Stadium.  The game was broadcast nationally on CBS Sports Network.  This was the second time the Cardinals appeared on the Division II Game of the Week.

High powered SVSU quarterback Jon Jennings finished the evening with 29 of 46 passes for 254 yards.   On the rushing side of the ball for the Cardinals Tim Hogue gained 101 yards and Ronnie Lark added 92 yards for a balanced attack.   With the win the Cardinals moved to an overall record 6-1 and 5-1 conference record go for 1st place. 

Wayne State University the 2011 Divsion II National runner-ups came into the contest looking to knock off the Cardinals.  SVSU leads the all time series with WSU 24-8-1.   Saginaw Valley coming off a big win over rival Northwood University 28 -20 last week still has the meat of their schedule ahead of them.   The only blemish on their record is a 29-27 loss to Findlay on a long field goal that fell just short. 

Saginaw Valley State University will now play the final four games with the goal of winning the GLIAC Conference title and qualify for the NCAA Division II playoffs.  The Cardinals will have two home games left in the season both being played at 1:00p.m.
