This past October, Saginaw Golds coach Corky Thompson announced he had purchased the rights to the
Lorain County (OH.) Ironmen of the GLCSL and that he would be changing the name to the Saginaw Sugar Beets, bringing organized baseball to Saginaw for the first time since the Saginaw Jacks played its final minor league baseball season as part of
the Central League, before the league folded following the 1951 season.
Sanctioned by Major League Baseball, the GLCSL is a wood-bat league comprised of non-paid college baseball players (primarily freshman and sophomores) from across the North America, with teams in Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, and Ontario, Canada.
The Sugar Beets will play 42 games throughout June and July (21 home, 21 away) with the season opener set for June 5, where the Beets will host the St. Clair (OH.) Green Giants at Dow Diamond, before finishing the 3-game series against the Green Giants June 6-7 at SVSU.
As part of the 2018 Sugar Festival, the Sugar Beets will also be participating in a special game on June 16, at Unionville-Sebawaing High School.
Season ticket packages are available at a cost of $63 for all 21 home games. There is also a four-game block package for $16 for the 4-games at Dow Diamond, or an 11-game package for $44 for the 11 games at SVSU.
