Following the loss of overage-veteran defenseman, Brandon Archibald to season ending shoulder surgery, the Saginaw Spirit acquired overage “blue-liner,” Jason Shaw from the Belleville Bulls on Monday November, 12 to make up for the loss of depth on the back end.

Shaw -who is the younger brother of Chicago Blackhawks forward, Andrew Shaw- was traded to the Spirit in exchange for a seventh round pick in the 2013 OHL priority selection draft (a pick which was originally property of the Barrie Colts). The Belleville, Ontario native began his OHL career in 2009-10 playing just seventeen games for the Niagara Ice Dogs, before making a brief move to the QMJHL.

Shaw played a total of sixty-three games for the Bulls, recording one goal and twenty assists, for a total of twenty-one points. Shaw has four assists for the Bulls so far this season. The 6’-0” 194 lb left-hand shooting defenseman should provide some much needed experience and depth to a very young, and decimated defensive group for the Spirit.

Archibald -who is 6'-4" and weighs 218 lbs- will be greatly missed as one of the more experienced defensmen in the Saginaw Spirit organization.  The Port Huron native was in his final year in the OHL and was looking to make an impact after being selected by the NHL's Columbus Bluejackets (fourth round, 94 overall) in the 2010 NHL draft.  Archibald's size, experience, and his overall good attitude will be hard to replace in the Spirit locker room.

The Spirit will likely have Shaw in the lineup when they host in-state rivals, the Plymouth Whalers on Wednesday November, 14 at the Dow Event Center for a 7:11 p.m. weekday game.  The Spirit will travel across the Detroit River to Windsor, Ontario on Thursday November, 15 for a 7:05 p.m. road game against the Windsor Spitfires; then, the team will return to the Dow Event Center on Saturday November, 17 for a 7:11 p.m. home contest against the visiting Brampton Battalion. As is always the case, we will be looking forward to seeing you down at the Dow…
