Michigan State University bound 2012 Mr. Basketball Matt Costello won the award on Monday night awarded to the state's top High School basketball player.   A four year varsity basketball player at Bay City Western easily won the award among the top five players in the State of Michigan.   The 6' 10" star student/athlete will take his skills to the next level in the Big Ten Conference powerhouse Michigan State Spartans.  This only will keep the Spartans at or near the top of the NCAA Division rankings for the next four years.

Parents Mike and Jennifer Costello have done an excellent job in raising their son into be a class student and a role model for many young students in the Bay City/Bay County area.   The 2012 Mr. Basketball has been a leader in the classroom as well as on the court in leading Bay City Western to 3 of its finest years in the extremely tough Saginaw Valley Conference.   The names of the former Mr. Basketball winners reads like a who's who in collegiate and professional basketball.  If Matt Costello continues to improve over the next four years as he has done over the last three seasons he will be a lottery pick in the NBA draft in 2015 or 2016.   I believe that Matt will play all four years at Michigan State University and then make his way into the NBA.

This reporter has gotten to know both Matt's parents and grandparents indirectly over the last two years and one can see where he gets the level head that he carries on that 6'10" frame of his.   They have provided him with the solid foundation for an extremely promising future for the humble basketball star from Bay City Western.

Matt Costello leaves Bay City Western as its all time leader in many areas with 1,520 points, 1,069 rebounds and 280 blocked shots in his 3 1/2 years on the Varsity.   He lead the Warriors to the State Semi-Finals in 2011 and a career best record at 24-3.  Bay City Western Coach Chris Watz had the pleasure of coaching one of the best High School players in the country the past 3 years.   Chris was impressed with all of the standout names on the Mr. Basketball Trophy that was presented to Matt in Detroit.

As I was watching the 2012 St. Patrick Day parade in Bay City I bumped into Matt's parents and they were proud to tell me that the Bay City Western Band would have a 6'10'' addition that day in the band.   As most know that Matt has a twin brother who banged the boards for the last couple of years with him.   John Costello who also was an extremely gifted athlete in his own right is also a pretty good musician who also plays in the Bay City Western band.

It has been fun and exciting to be on the Matt Costello bandwagon and seeing all the great things happen to this fine young gentleman.   One can only see bright and positive things happening over the next four years.   I would go out onto a limb and make some predications on what he will achieve while his completes his career at MSU.   I don't think it would take a rocket scientist to make these simple predications.   Best of Success to Matt Costello in whatever he decides to do even if he does what his mother Jennifer hopes for "A good Stay-at-Home father."
