Bay City Western's Matt Costello is a leading candidate for the 2012 Mr. Basketball award in the State of Michigan.   One of five final candidates for the highly coveted award he is having a career season in which he has become Bay City Westerns all time leading scorer and rebounder.  The fourth year varsity basketball player was called up to the varsity unit half way through his freshman season.

Matt Costello made his choice to attend Michigan State University during his sophomore season at Bay City Western.   Since that time Matt has lead the Warriors to the best three seasons in school history and created a lot of excitement in Auburn.   The 6'10" forward can almost score at will and rebound over the shorter players that he has faced in the 3 1/2 years on the varsity.   However one would be quick to see that Matt Costello is the complete team player and will quickly dish off the ball to an open teammate than rather score to add to his stats.

The 2012 McDonald's High School All-American basketball player will lead his team into the MHSAA State Tournament over the next three weeks in hopes of repeating their run to the Class A semi-finals.  The semi-finals that they lost at the Breslin Center in 2011 was a tough pill to swallow because of the talented roster that was at Bay City Western.   However the Warriors will jump on the broad shoulders of the future Spartan and make a long trek again in 2012.

Matt Costello has been a shining example of what a true student/athlete is all about.  Just ask any teacher that has taught Matt over the last four years at BCW.  Matt does have a twin brother John Costello who has played along side his taller brother through out their playing days.   John Costello a true 6'4" 255 pound sized football player will pursue a music career in College.

One can only see positive things happening for Matt Costello over the next four years in East Lansing.   MSU Head Coach Tom Izzo has selected an outstanding citizen and one superstar in the making.   I'm convinced that by this time next year that Matt will be starting and leading the Spartans to Big Ten Championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament.   It has been an enjoyable four years out in the cornfield.   If you have an opportunity to see Bay City Western play in the MHSAA tournament this season by all means do so.   One day you will be seeing this 6'10" forward playing on your television set at home.
