Just when things were not looking good for the Great Lakes Loons on Sunday in front of 4,333 fans it got interesting. On a hot day at Dow Diamond the Loons entered the bottom of the 9th inning trailing 3-2 when the Lugnuts got the first two Loons out.
Great Lakes which had chances to blow the game wide open in the 7th inning by getting the bases loaded with just one out. But they failed to move the ball and saw the scoring threat fade away until the 9th inning when they would rally for the win. The Loons victory would move them to 20-22 in the 2nd half of the season and into the second position for qualifying for the Midwest League playoffs.
The Loons would get a single and a walk to quickly put two men on base with two outs. The crowd then became a bit more noisy. Josmar Cordero then would actually strike out for the third out of the game however the ball went sailing to the backstop. Cordero still not out because the third strike must be caught took off for 1st base. The Lansing catcher threw wildly which allowed the runner on second to score and tie the game at 3-3.
Jesmuel Valentin coming of the disabled list for the first time in seven days would now pinch hit. On the second pitch he drilled a single up the middle to allow the runner Brandon Trinkwon to score from third and the celebration started. This victory might turn the season in the right direction for the Loons in their attempt to make the Midwest League playoffs in 2014.
Reliever Mark Pope would pitch just one inning and end up with the victory. The Loons now travel to Dayton for a 3 game series and then off to South Bend for a 4 game series. Great Lakes returns back home to the Dow Diamond to play. The Loons only have 9 remaining home games in the 2014 season. Their home attendance went over the 185,000 mark for the season.
