To say the Great Lakes Loons have had an up-and-down month of July would be a huge understatement. The Loons started the month with four straight losses, followed by five straight wins, followed by six straight losses, followed by five straight wins; and after splitting their first two games with the Burlington Bees, winning Wednesday and losing last night, the Loons look to win the rubber-match game against the Bees tonight and break that streaky cycle.

Despite their lack of consistency, the Loons are sitting comfortably in third place in the eastern division of the MWL, behind the West Michigan Whitecaps and the Southbend Silverhawks. In third place, the Loons actually are in first position for the second half playoff spot. The Whitecaps and Silverhawks finished the first half of the MWL season in first and second place respectively; earning automatic bids into the post-season (according to the MWL playoff structure). So, the first two eastern division teams to finish atop the second-half standings (or at least behind the Whitecaps and/or Silverhawks) will complete the final two playoff spots for the 2014 post-season; which begins early in September.

Following tonight's rubber-match with Burlington, the Loons will continue their current road trip with a three-game series in Peoria; before returning to Dow Diamond for the final three games of July against the Fort Wayne Tincaps starting Tuesday July, 29 Wednesday July, 30 and Thursday July, 31. The Loons will continue their home stand into the first three days of August with a three-game series against the Lansing Lugnuts on August, 1-2-3.
