Giving up 3-runs in the top half of the ninth inning, combined with only 3-total team hits was a recipe for the Great Lakes Loons' (44-48) ninth consecutive loss, falling 5-1 to the Beloit (WI.) Snappers (Oakland A's) in front of 5,229 fans at Dow Diamond tonight.

Trailing 2-1 in the top of the ninth, Loons reliever Ryan Moseley (who has struggled this year with the Loons) looked to be back on track as he cruised through the seventh and eighth; while striking out the first batter in the ninth before walking a batter, hitting the next, and giving up a subsequent single and double for 3-runs, allowing the Snappers to blow the game open with a 5-1 lead midway through the ninth.

Since joining the Loons two days before the All Star break, Moseley (7.24 ERA) has now given up 13-runs in 15 1/3 relief innings. Tonight, the eighth round pick of the Baltimore Orioles in the 2016 MLB draft out of Texas Tech gave up 3-runs on 2-hits and 1-walk, while striking out 4-batters through 3-innings.

Loons starter Jordan Sheffield, who has also struggled this year, gave up four straight singles to the first four batters of the game, before walking the fifth, however, he would regroup and only give up 1-run as the Snappers took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

Great Lakes shortstop Brendon Davis belted a 1-out triple in the bottom of the second, then scored when third baseman Cristian Santana reached on a fielding error to tie the game at 1-run apiece.

Beloit shortstop Eric Martinez laced a 1-out single, then scored on an RBI-double off the bat of first baseman Kyle Nowlin to jump back on top 2-1 in the top of the fifth.

Sheffield (2-7, 4.16 ERA) had a quality start, however, with little run support, he was tagged with his seventh loss of the season after giving up 2-runs on 6-hits and 4-walks, while hitting double digits with 10-stikeouts through 6-innings tonight.

Davis was 1 for 3 with a walk, including his triple and 1-run scored, while Santana went 1 for 3 with 1-RBI, and center fielder Cody Thomas finished 1 for 4 to round out the only 3 Great Lakes hits.

The Loons will look to stop the bleeding in game-2 of this 3-game series with Beloit at 2:05 pm tomorrow afternoon at Dow Diamond.
