The Great Lakes Loons (5-13) dropped the final game of a four-game series, splitting (2-2) after a 4-1 loss to the Fort Wayne Tincaps (San Diego Padres) in a rare morning game at Dow Diamond that finished early this afternoon.

Loons starter Wills Montgomerie (0.50 ERA) put his team in excellent position for success with a brilliant outing, allowing just 2-hits and a walk, with 7-strikeouts through 5-scoreless innings.

Tincaps starter Tom Cosgrove (1-2, 5.94) however, managed to be just good enough to keep the Loons off the scoreboard during his start, allowing 5-hits and 2-walks, with 6-strikeouts through 6-scoreless innings to earn his first win of the season.

Loons reliever Riley Ottesen replaced Montgomerie in the sixth and looked good in his first inning, but ran into trouble in the next when Fort Wayne catcher Juan Fernandez led off with a double, moved to third on a sac fly, then scored on a ground-out RBI off the bat of Fort Wayne second baseman Reinaldo Ilarraza for a 1-0 Tincaps lead in the top of the seventh.

The Tincaps would add another 3-runs in the next inning when CF Jeisson Rosario led off with a triple, then scored on a fielders choice by third baseman Esteury Ruiz, who advanced to second on an error, before an RBI-single off the bat of RF Tirso Ornelas drove in Ruiz, who eventually scored on a wild pitch for a 4-0 Tincaps lead in the top half of the eighth inning.

Ottesen (0-2, 9.53 ERA) was charged with his second loss of the season after giving up 4-runs on 4-hits and 1-walk, with 3-strikeouts through 4-innings.

The Loons would make it interesting when Jared Walker (2) belted a 2-out solo home run, his second of the season, off Tincaps reliever Jared Carkuff to make it a 4-1 game in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Carkuff (SV,1) would go on to earn the save after giving up just the 1-run on 2-hits and 1-walk, with 3-strikeouts through 3-innings after replacing Cosgrove in the seventh.

After seven straight games at Dow Diamond, the Loons will now take on the South Bend Cubs (Chicago Cubs) in a 3-game road series at Four Winds Field at Coveleski Stadium in South Bend, IN, before ending the month of April with a day off on Monday, then returning to Dow Diamond for 6-more consecutive home games (Tue-Mon) next week.
