At a press conference on Thursday afternoon at Dow Diamond, The Great Lakes Loons announced its plans for the festivities surrounding the
53rd annual Midwest League All Star Game presented by
GoGreat.com set to take place in Midland, MI on Monday and Tuesday June 19-20 at Dow Diamond.
It all starts Monday afternoon with a 3 pm tailgate party on the front lawn at Dow Diamond which is open to the public and no ticket is required. Inflatables and other activities will be available for kids, as well as a beer garden to purchase drinks for attendees who are 21 years of age or older.
The gates at Dow Diamond will open at 3 pm on Monday afternoon for the 2017 High School All Star Game, taking place prior to the Home Run Derby.
The first pitch for the 2017 H.S. All Star Game, featuring Midland, Saginaw, and Bay City's top high school senior baseball players, is set for 4:05 pm. This will be a ticketed event and the ticket will be good for both, the H.S. All Star Game and the MWL Home Run Derby.
The 2017 MWL Home Run Derby presented by
Chemical Bank is scheduled for 7:05 pm Monday June, 19. The competition will feature 8 sluggers from both MWL All Star teams. The format will follow a shot-clock system with timed rounds through the finals.
Combo tickets for the 2017 H.S. All Star Game and the 2017 MWL Home Run Derby will cost $7 (Lawn seats) and $10 (reserved box seats) available at the Dow Diamond box office.
Monday's events will conclude with a free concert (no ticket from MWLHRD required to attend) by
Nashville recording artist Chris Weaver on the front lawn of Dow Diamond. Weaver, who was named one of Billboard's '10 artists to watch in 2013,' performs a mix of southern rock, soul, and country blues.
Tuesday
The next day will be the culminating event, the 2017 MWL All Star Game presented GoGreat.com starting at 7:05 pm at Dow Diamond. The league's mid-summer classic has featured some of major league baseball's current stars, including: former Loon
Clayton Kershaw,
Miguel Cabrera,
Mike Trout, and
Noah Syndergaard. Tickets for the 2017 MWLASG are available for $10 (lawn seats) and $16 (reserved box seats) at the Dow Diamond ticket office.
There will be allotted times on both nights where fans can meet players, take pictures, and get autograph's from each teams respective all star's.
On Monday, players from both team's will be present in the concourse during the H.S. All Star Game where they will be signing autograph's. On Tuesday, players from each team will be available for autograph's prior to the MWLASG during batting practice.
The 2017 MWLASG teams' will be managed by the current managers from the 2016 MWL championship series.
The west all star's will be managed by
Pat Shine, manager of the Clinton (IA.) Lumber Kings (Seattle Mariners), while the East will be led by
Jeremy Rodriguez who is the current manager of the 2016 MWL champion Great Lakes Loons.
The Great Lakes Loons' parent club, the Los Angeles Dodgers have named former MLB stars
Raul Ibanez and
Charlie Hough as honorary captains for the 2017 MWLASG and both will be present in Midland for the two days of events.
Ibanez, 44, played for eight teams over 19 MLB seasons and currently serves as a special assistant to the Dodgers' president of baseball operations, Andrew Friedman.
Hough, 69, put together 216 wins and 2,362 strike outs as a knuckle-ball specialist over 25 MLB seasons, and currently serves as senior adviser of player development for the Dodgers.
