The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Great Lakes Bay Region has opened registration for summer sessions at six sites across Saginaw and Bay Counties, providing school-age childcare at low or no cost for local families.
“It is our mission to serve young people, especially those who need us most,” Program Director Taiece Anderson said. “For us to succeed, fees can’t be a barrier to a child experiencing all that our Clubs have to offer. Therefore, we keep registration as inexpensive as possible, and we are happy to provide additional support whenever it’s needed.”
The organization charges $50 per child for the Clubs’ summer session, which takes place from June to August; financial assistance is available on request. Each Club is open for at least eight hours each day, Monday through Thursday, with hot meals served for all participants.
According to the US Department of Labor, Saginaw County families with school-age children spend a median of $8,178 annually for childcare, which exceeds the means of many households. Bay County families spend over $7,200, while the Midland County figure exceeds $9,000.
The Clubs fulfill households’ short-term needs by providing affordable afterschool and summer childcare, thereby expanding employment opportunities and upward mobility; furthermore, they prepare young people for long-term success, instilling essential skills and a love of learning through innovative programming.
This summer, Club members will have the opportunity to try rock climbing, fishing, gardening, and numerous other activities. Additionally, participants will take part in learning loss prevention programs, including a summer literacy course.
“Any family seeking positive programs for young people should explore the opportunities at our Clubs,” CEO Lynn Pavlawk said. “We provide an unparalleled experience and a safe place for children to learn, play, and grow."
