MIDLAND, MI- The Great Lakes Loons moved to within one win away from qualifying for the 2016 Midwest League playoffs with their 3-1 win over the West Michigan Whitecaps.  After dropping the first game of the evening a suspended game from July 7th 4-3 to the Whitecaps a win in the second game was paramount.

In the second game which is shortened to 7 innings because in Minor League baseball doubleheaders are shortened to 7 inning games.  The Loons got thing started early by scoring two runs in the first inning on RBI's by Omar Estevez and Landon Logan to take the 2-0 lead.   The Loons would tack on another run in third inning when Saige Jenco scored on another RBI by Omar Estevez.  West Michigan would get there only run of the game when Cam Gibson the son of former Detroit Tiger Kirk Gibson (who was in attendance at Dow Diamond) would score from third base in the sixth inning.

The Loons now 34-34 in the second half of the Midwest League season can clinch a playoff spot with a win on Sunday against West Michigan or a loss by the Lansing Lugnuts.   Starting pitcher Leo Crawford pitched another gem tonight by going five innings and not allowing a run while striking out 6 batters.   Great Lakes looking to secure a spot in the playoffs can accomplish this with a win today and the fifth time in the 10 year history of the Great Lakes Loons.   If the Loons do qualify for the playoffs they would start with Game #1 at Dow Diamond on Wednesday September 7th against the Bowling Green HotRods.
