The Great Lakes Loons finally open the 2015 season at home against the Lansing Lugnuts after losing the first three games of the year due to weather and field conditions at the Dow Diamond.  But the season would start in Grand Rapids the home of the West Michigan Whitecaps for the first games of the year. The Loons start the season on a good note for first year manager Luis Matos with 3 wins against in state rival the West Michigan Whitecaps.

The Loons would return home and finally start the season on Wednesday April 15th against the Lugnuts.  A small crowd would turn out for this chilly opener under sunny skies with 59 degree temperature.  However a strong wind from the east made Dow Diamond very chilly.   The Loons and Lugnuts would actually play a very close game until the top of the 9th inning when the Lugnuts would score a single run to take a 2-1 lead.

The Loons would score their only run in the third on a single from the youngest player on the team Alex Vedugo.  Starting pitchers for both teams would both go 5 innings and looked strong.  Loons Victor Gonzalez pitched a fine game in his first start at Dow Diamond.   The Loons fall to 3-1 on the young season while the Lugnuts raise their record to 6-1 for a first place standing in the Eastern Division of the Midwest League.
