Frankenmuth, MI:

The Frankenmuth (3-0) boys basketball team improved to 3-0 with an impressive 64-51 victory over Saginaw Heritage H.S. in a non-conference match-up at Frankenmuth H.S. tonight.

The win now gives the Eagles (who beat Flint Powers 74-67 ten days ago) a 2-0 record against Saginaw Valley League teams. Couple those wins with a 72-62 victory over TVC east rival Essexville Garber this past Friday night, and the Eagles now find themselves off to a 3-0 start.

Frankenmuth jumped out to an early 10-4 lead mid-way through the first quarter, led by a steal and thunderous dunk from Muth senior superstar Mario Whitley, before the Eagles finished out the quarter with an 18-7 advantage.

Heritage managed to cut into the Frankenmuth lead with some 3-point shooting in the second quarter when junior's Luke Telder and Keith McGregor each drained a three, followed by senior Jacoby McLaurin, who hit back to back 3-pointers to make it a 27-23 game with just over 2-minutes left in the half.

Frankenmuth, however, would widen its lead just before halftime when senior Sam Gray was fouled while in the act of shooting a 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer, and the Muth point guard proceeded to knock down all three free throws to give his Eagles a 30-23 lead at the half.

Heritage junior Luke Telder scored seven points in the third quarter to keep the Hawks close, but Frankenmuth senior Zach Jacobs scored five points, and Whitley added another 4-points in the quarter, stretching the Eagles' lead to 47-38 after three quarters of play.

Heritage junior Alex Day energized the Heritage bench after following up a mid-court steal with an explosive one-handed slam dunk early in the fourth quarter, before cutting the Muth lead to 52-49 after draining a deep 3-pointer with just over 2-minutes to play.

The Eagles, however, would prove its discipline with some very strong free throw shooting by its top two scorers down the stretch, as Gray (6 of 7) and Whitley (6 of 7) combined to make 12 of 14 from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter to finish off the Hawks.

Whitley led Frankenmuth with a game-high 23-points and 7-rebounds, while shooting 6 for 8 from the free throw line, as Gray followed with 18-points and 5-assists, while going 9 for 10 from the charity stripe.

Jacobs and Frankenmuth junior Carson Bell each finished with 8-points and 5-boards apiece respectively, followed by senior Stanley Trombley, who added 5-points and 7-rebounds, while junior Thomas Brooks chipped in with 2-points for the Eagles.

Telder led all Hawks' scorers with 14-points, followed by senior Justin McMurren with 9-points, and McLaurin, who had a productive night with 8-points, along with Day, who dropped all 7 of his points in the fourth quarter.

Heritage senior Majestik Dudley and sophomore Cade Beall, each added 4-points apiece respectively, while McGregor's 3-pointer and junior Brian Booker's 2-points would round out the Hawks' scoring.

Both teams are off until after the Christmas break when Heritage (2-3) hosts Flint Carmen-Ainsworth on Jan. 5, for a 7:30 pm tip-off inside the Heritage gym, while Frankenmuth (first place in the TVC east) prepares for a 7 pm crossover game Jan. 3, against TVC central foe, Swan Valley H.S. inside the Swan Valley gym.
