On a hot sunny afternoon at Commerica Park the Detroit Tigers dropped the rubber game of the series to the Minnesota Twins 7-6.  It would mark another rough start for Tiger ace Justin Verlander.  Verlander who has struggled at times this season is having probably the toughest season in his major league career.  Some innings he looks unhittable and then some innings the hitters are having a field day.

The Tigers played from behind the entire day but had their chances in both the 8th and 9th innings to tie the game or go ahead and win.  Bryan Holladay and Austin Jackson were the hitting stars on the day for the Tigers with Jackson hitting a 3 run Home Run to tie the score up at 6-6 after 6 innings.  Playing in front of 39, 653 fans the Tigers would not score again as the Twins relief pitchers shut them down.  Miguel Cabrera who went 0 for 4 but had many runners on base during his at bats.

Detroit now holds a 5 game lead over the Cleveland Indians in the Central Division of the American League with the Kansas City Royals falling out of contention.  The Tigers will head to New York to play the Mets in a 3 game series before returning to Commerica Park for the next to last home stand of the season.

The Tigers enter the final 35 games of the season with a nice lead but I'm sure that manager Jim Leyland would like to increase that by a few games.  He is a proponent of resting certain players to keep them fresh for the American League Playoffs.
