The Detroit Tigers lost to the Kansas City Royals 2-1 in extra innings on Sunday Night Baseball on ESPN.   The Mother's Day game was flying along on an overcast night in downtown Detroit.  However the rain would start in the late innings and then when it moved into the bottom of the ninth the skies opened up.    Shane Greene bounced back from a previous rough start to pitch a strong 8 innings for the Tigers.  Reliever Joakim Soria pitched a good 9th inning setting things up for the bottom of the 9th.

The Tigers would only eek out 5 hits on the night to score the only run of the game in the third inning.   On the night where all of the players were wearing pink in support of "Cancer Awareness" the Tigers came up a bit short.   Miguel Cabrera came up in the bottom of the 9th with a 1-1 tie and then the clouds opened up with a downpour which would cause a 1:43 minute delay.   When the game resumed almost the entire crowd had left Comerica Park.   Cabrera would come back up in the 9th inning and drew a walk.   The Tigers would get two men on but failed to score.   Then again in the bottom of the 10th the Tigers had their chances but couldn't advance the tying run in.    The Royals scored a run in the top of the tenth inning and really could've added a couple more but didn't.

The large Mother's Day crowd of almost 30,000 watched the pitching dual between Greene and Chris Young.   Young has pitched some of his best games against the Tigers in recent memory.   The Tigers dropped 2 out of 3 to the Royals and surrendered 1st place.   They are now 1 1/2 games behind the Royals.   After an off day today the Tigers will face the red hot Minnesota Twins in a three series at Comerica Park.
