Midland, MI:

The Saginaw Sugar Beets (7-8-0) returned to action after a 3-day break, getting an 11-K performance from starter Brandon Reed (Central Michigan University) for his second and the team's seventh win of the season with a 6-1 victory over the Muskegon Clippers (7-5-0) at Bullock Creek High School tonight.

The Beets jumped out to an early lead after Noah Marcoux (Davenport University) led off the game with a double, then moved to third on an infield ground-out by Cooper Marshall (Western Michigan University) while Connor Charping (Western Michigan University) reached with a walk to put runners at first and third with 2-outs.

With Sugar Beets newcomer (a Reno, NV native) Daniel Page (Hofstra University) at the plate making his Saginaw debut, Marcoux managed to score on a wild pitch, while Charping followed, crossing home on an error by the Muskegon catcher, before Page introduced himself to the Sugar Beets faithful with a solo home run to open up a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.

The Clippers answered with its only run off Reed (CMU) in the top of the second when DH Ryan Blake-Jones (Grand Valley State University) led off the inning with a single, before he was driven in on an RBI-single by Clippers' second baseman Nolan Brimbury (Indiana State University) to cut the Saginaw lead to 3-1 midway through the second inning.

That run would be the only blemish for Reed (2-1, 3.97 ERA) a former Millington standout, who picked up his second win of the season after giving up the 1-run on 3-hits and 3-walks, while striking out an incredible 11-Muskegon batters through 6 1/3 innings tonight.

Saginaw extended its lead in the third when catcher Adam Proctor (Michigan State University) singled then was driven in by Page for a 4-1 Sugar Beets lead in the bottom of the third inning.

The Beets followed with a couple more runs in the fourth when Marcoux was walked with the bases loaded, allowing LF Sean Fannon (Lawrence Tech) to score from third, before Marshall was hit by a pitch, bringing Brady Wood (Adrian College) home for a 6-1 Saginaw lead in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Sugar Beets reliever Ryan Jungbauer (University of Northwestern Ohio) replaced Reed and allowed just 1-walk, with 3-strikeouts through 1 2/3 innings, before closer Matt Blunk (Lawrence Tech) recorded the final 3-outs, allowing just a walk in the ninth.

Page finished 2 for 4 with 3-RBI's and 1-run scored, followed by Ryan Missal (Western Michigan University) who was 2 for 4 to pace the Sugar Beets' offense, while Marshall followed, going 1 for 2 with an RBI and 1-walk; along with Marcoux, who was 1 for 3 with 1-RBI, 1-run scored and 1-walk, and Fannon who was 1 for 3 with 1-run scored.

The Sugar Beets will return to host the Hamilton (OH.) Joe's for the second of five games scheduled to be played at Bullock Creek high school this year at 7:05 pm tomorrow night.
