The Great Lakes Loons (44-39) scored all five of its runs in the top of the third inning when 'Bomb-Brother's' Cody Thomas (14) and Carlos Rincon (14) belted back to back home runs (their fourteenth of the season respectively) to lead the Loons to a 5-2 win over the South Bend Cubs (Chicago Cubs) in front of 3,507 at Four Winds Field in South Bend, IN tonight.

The three newest players on the Loons' roster; first baseman Cristian Santana, second baseman Jared Walker, and left fielder Zach Reks hit back to back to back singles to set off the third inning rally.

Santana and Walker led off the inning with single's followed by Reks (who just joined the Loons yesterday after being drafted by the Dodgers in the tenth round of last month's MLB draft out of the University of Kentucky) whose RBI single drove in Santana for a 1-0 lead.

Shortstop Gavin Lux then grounded Reks into a fielders choice force-out at second, moving Walker to third before third baseman Brendon Davis drove him in with a sac fly RBI for a 2-0 Loons lead; which set the table for Thomas (14) to drive in Lux with a 2-run home run, followed by his 'Bomb-Brother' Rincon (14) who crushed a solo shot for a 5-0 Loons lead midway through the third.

Loons starter Dustin May took a 2-hit shutout with two outs into the fifth inning before surrendering a single and a triple for his only earned run, as a Loons fielding error would account for the other Cubs run.

May (5-3, 3.24 ERA) gave up the 1-earned run on 4-hits and a walk, while striking out 2-batters through 5-innings.

Reliever Vinny Santarsiero (H1, 2.57 ERA) shut down the Cubs in the sixth, seventh and eighth to earn his first hold of the season. He would relent just 1-walk, while striking out 2-batters through 3-innings of relief.

Loons closer Angel German (S5, 1.19 ERA) allowed 1-hit, while striking out 1-batter to close out the ninth, earning his fifth save of the season.

Eight different Great Lakes batters had hits tonight for the Loons, led by Reks who was 2 for 3 with a walk and 1-RBI. The former Kentucky Wildcat is hitting .500 (3 for 6) in his two games with the Loons.

Santana has a .421 average since joining the Loons on July, 1 against West Michigan.

The Loons will try to take this 3-game series in the rubber-match tomorrow at Four Winds Field before heading south to Bowling Green, KY for a 4-game series with the Bowling Green Hot Rods (Tampa Bay Rays) Fri-Mon.
