Saginaw Valley State University prevailed in the 40th annual Axe Bowl defeating Northwood University 16-14.   SVSU's Scott Stanford would kick the game winning field goal midway through the 4th quarter to secure the win.    Stanford would kick 3 field goals on the day for the 2-6 Cardinals who are struggling through the season.  However the Cardinals would play a solid game on Homecoming for the Cardinals.

Having graduated from SVSU myself I have seen the whole event of Homecoming and the annual Axe Bowl become quite an event on the campus of SVSU.   The Alumni Association does an excellent job of promoting Homecoming getting hundreds of Alumni to return to campus for the weekend and football game.   The parade that proceed the game itself has been an event of its own.

Northwood University who came into the game with a 4-3 record never could get its offense going during the game.    The Timberwolves would score at the end of the third period with Damian Nicholson on a 7 yard scoring run for their only lead at 14-13.

Exciting quarterback Tyler Palka a red shirt freshman would have a big day for the Cardinals with 13 of 17 passing for 182 yards.   He would also run the ball 18 times picking up 72 yards.

Saginaw Valley now owns a 26-14 record in the Axe Bowl.   The Cardinals now will be on the road for 2 weeks and then return to Wickes Stadium for the annual clash with Grand Valley State University who also is experiencing a down season.   The Timberwolves will face Ohio Dominican next Saturday at 1:00p.m. at Hantz Stadium.
