In one of the most highly anticipated match-ups in High School baseball the Bay City Western Warriors took on the Mount Pleasant Oilers in the first game of the MHSAA playoffs.   Both teams came into the contest with outstanding regular season records and both experiencing recent State Championships in Baseball.   In fact both of the long time coaches Luke Epple (Mount Pleasant) and Tim McDonald (Bay City Western) are former star players from Central Michigan University.  After all was said and done the Warriors would prevail in this long drawn out affair 7-3 to move into the semi-finals of this Division 1 District Tournament against Midland Dow on Saturday June 4th.

Midland High School was packed with the largest crowd that I have seen at Chemic Field waiting for this showdown.   Both teams didn't disappoint either. Bay City Western got on board first with an RBI double from cleanup hitter Hunter David.   David would go 3 for 3 on the day as the main clog in the potent Western batting line-up.   The game see-sawed back and forth with the game knotted at 3-3 going into the top of the fifth inning before the Western Warriors broke the game open a bit with 3 runs.  Western took advantage of a couple errors, walks, hit batters to notch the 3 runs going up 6-3.

These teams had meet just five days earlier to decide the Saginaw Valley Conference Championship in baseball with Bay City Western coming out on top.   Mount Pleasant came into the game with a 31-6 record while the Western Warriors just finished a top notch Flint Champions Tournament with a record of (4-0) to move to 32-3 on the season.  Mount Pleasant's Hunter Buczkowski wasn't on top of his game this day in the slowly played contest in beautiful weather.   As the game progressed batter's were getting signs from their coaches and players on the field were receiving signs to relay to infielders slowed down the game considerably.  It was like a chess match.

However the real star of the game came from someone that no one would have guessed in the form of Cody Freed.  Freed came on to pitch in the bottom of the third inning with a real mess on his hands.  All he did was get out of the inning and finish the game with 4 2/3 innings of work and allow no runs.  Oh yes that is the same Cody Freed who froze the Mount Pleasant bats a week earlier for the SVC Championship.   Brady Leppek would also play an important role in driving in two runs and scoring twice himself.

Mount Pleasant a traditionally solid team would commit 6 errors on the day and just seemed a bit taken back after the Western team took the lead 6-3.  Mount Pleasant finishes the season with a 31-7 record.   The other two teams in this district Midland High and Bay City Central were also in attendance scouting their potential final matchup for this Saturday.    Western moves on with their #1 starter (Jason Clark) to pitch on Saturday.   Bay City Western puts a solid line-up on the field 1-9 with a number of quality players on the bench with a number of under classman ready to go when called for.
