Kahn announces property tax forums in Saginaw County

Sen. Roger Kahn, R-Saginaw Township, will host two forums in Saginaw County on how to appeal property tax bills. Both meetings are free and open to the public.

“Last year I held property tax appeal seminars to give residents information on how to effectively appeal their property tax bills,” Kahn said. “There were many important questions that needed answers. That’s why I’m proud to host similar events this year to help people understand the property tax appeal process.”

The free forums will feature attorney Mike Bosnic, who handles property tax appeals in his practice. Bosnic will discuss appeal methods and common mistakes to avoid, and answer questions from area taxpayers.

The forums are scheduled as follows: Monday, Feb. 15; 7 p.m.; Saginaw Valley State University; Curtiss Hall, second floor.

Wednesday, Feb. 17; 7 p.m.; Peet Community Center; 130 N. Saginaw St.; Chesaning.

Last year’s seminars highlighted several shortcomings in state law. Kahn said many attendees had not received their assessment notices in time for the forums, which occurred only a couple weeks before the March Board of Review.

“That’s why I have introduced legislation to allow residents to appeal by letter rather than in person and require assessment notices be sent out earlier, among other changes,” Kahn said. “I also co-sponsored a measure that would prevent property taxes from increasing if your home’s value has fallen.”

For those who cannot attend the forums, written information will be available through Kahn’s office by calling toll free 1-866-305-2132 or writing senrkahn@senate.michigan.gov.

“Property taxes and the appeal process can be confusing,” Kahn said. “That is why it’s extremely important for people to have the proper information on how to effectively appeal their property tax bills. I strongly encourage the public to attend.”
