Universal Wrestling Alliance Presents New Showcase  on January 23rd

Wrestler and promoter Manny Zamora, Bridgeport High School Class of 1992, says he is determined to continue bringing affordable family entertainment to the community.

Zamora, a.k.a. Alcatraz, is renting the Knights of Columbus Hall at 2280 Williamson for another Universal Wrestling Alliance showcase at 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 23.

He plans to continue monthly presentations at least through May in cooperation with fellow Bridgeport High alum Monte Brown, who went on to a career in pro football and wrestling.

“We decided, why can’t we do something like this for the kids in Saginaw?” explains Zamora. “Our events are family oriented, no cuss words, something that the children can enjoy.”

More than 100 supporters turned out for a December event. With the tough economy in mind, Zamora is holding prices to $5 for advance ticket sales or $10 for ringside, for more than two full hours of nonstop wrestling. Pizza slices, pops and bottled water go for $1 apiece, a fraction of the prices charged at sports arenas.

“This is being done totally through the wrestlers doing their own self-promotion,” says Zamora, who noted that the pre-Christmas event raised $1,596 in contributions for the Michigan Food Bank.

Advance tickets can be purchased at the KFC Hall at Williamson and Sheridan, or at Jamz Cellular, 1307 Court.

Zamora can be reached at 529-3172.
