One Man
Show Scheduled for Artowork by Dennis Adomaitis
By Robert
E. Martin
While
Dennis Adomaitis is well known in the mid-Michigan area as
proprietor of the legendary Adomaitis Antiques on Court Street in
Old Saginaw City, his formidable talent as an artist specializing in
portraiture is both substantial and impressive.
Having
taught art for 36 years, starting in the early 1970’s at Freeland and
St. Stephen’s High Schools, Dennis has created hundreds of oil paintings
over the expanse of his career, and is now being featured in his first
one-man show at The Magic Bean Café from October 2-31st.
With over
35 pieces included in the exhibition, the show delineates the wide and
expressive range of talent possessed by Adomaitis. “I really like faces
and am attracted to them,” notes Dennis. “While I can work from either a
still life or a model, I prefer working from life on most of my
portraits because it tends to reveal more dimension and avoids the
flatness that comes from working from a still photo.”
Dennis
notes that it takes him anywhere from three to 40-hours to render most
of his original oil paintings, depending upon the nature of the
subject. “I enjoy rendering still life portraits of antique objects;
but I much prefer using people as subjects, or dogs, such as my Cairn
Terriers.”
Another
arena Dennis enjoys experimenting with is working with brown paint and
turpentine, which creates a sepia tone effect and is especially
effective when it comes to rendering landscapes.
Because
it is something he enjoys working on daily, especially since his
retirement as a teacher 3 years ago, Dennis notes that he creates at
least two new paintings per week.
While
this is his first one-man show slated at The Magic Bean, Dennis
has also exhibited at the Ann Arbor Art Center, First Congregational
Church, and The Shiawassee Art Center in Owosso.
`The
Magic Bean Café is located at 5789 State St. in Saginaw
Township. |
