Liberal Media Bias. That’s the battle cry of those who would like you to believe that they are holier than thou. It usually happens when one of them is exposed in some fashion or another for being a fraud. Hey – you may even believe in it. But maybe one factor in the challenges facing traditional media is this attitude (it seemed to have started with Nixon) that the media has a “liberal” bias. I suppose if what you are reading doesn’t sit well with your worldview, then maybe there is a bias. Duh. Newsbusters, a “project” of the Media Research Center, is the latest to jump on the bandwagon of slamming David Letterman for his off-color remark about Sarah Palin and her daughter. Face it; she’s a public figure, he was probably talking about her older daughter (the one who had the kid out of wedlock) and even if he were, what special protection does Sarah Palin deserve? Letterman’s made jokes about lots of famous people. I’ve laughed at most of them. I am sure Bill and Hillary Clinton would have loved to have the nutjob media machine that is behind http://www.firedavidletterman.com/, the website started as a media stunt by Michael Patrick Leahy to promote his new radio talk show and especially, his new book on “organizing radical conservatives”. (Please note he is not to be confused with either Patrick Leahy, the Senator from Vermont, or Michael Leahy, the noted sportswriter). I hate the bully pulpit. I especially don’t like it when people complain about Letterman’s joke or jokes, and phrase their organization against The Late Show as a way to “…return common decency to political discourse in this country…”. Penn and Teller has a show devoted to this type of malarkey. This is a variety show, a comedy show. It’s on late at night, when kids are supposed to be in bed. But who cares anyway – Palin, by accepting the Republican nomination for Vice President, became a public figure and exposed her family to the same scrutiny that all public figures are now under. Again, ask the Clintons about that. Or the Bush twins. Or Mary Cheney. So – the decision is whether Letterman’s joke is actionable. One comment on the aforementioned website says that Dawn Ray of Embassy Suites has pulled their ads off of the Letterman show, another says that Capital One is trying to do so. Intel, Toyota, eBay, Best Western – all are listed. Electronic Arts, Mar’s Candies, L’Oreal are also mentioned. And I am sure that mine is one in a barrage of email, with quite a few calling for Letterman’s head, from people who don’t even watch The Late Show. But I do. And my friends do. In fact, I’ve been watching Letterman since he started on NBC. Palin will, in her manner, fuel this for all it is worth – she wants to be in the media and that good ol’ liberal media bias will continue to keep her there. She’s inferred that Letterman is a rapist, that he can’t be “trusted” around 14-year-old girls. That is about as vile a charge as anyone could make, is not defensible and is an abuse of the entire situation. Face it – Letterman is funny and he sells products. Palin is not and she does not. And I and all the other David Letterman fans can vote with our pocketbooks, and there are more of us then there are of the Palinites. I wonder how many people read Palin & her ilk correctly when they started down this path; do they understand she’s looking for the media attention, which she cares about probably more than her daughter? Crocodile tears; if she cared about her daughters she would have been able to prevent her older daughter’s pregnancy. Instead she trotted her out onto the national stage, paraded her around and then excused it under the cloak of religion. Sincerely, George Head Via the Internet
