Bakers • 75 Years of Greatness

World Class Jazz Club Holds Special Celebration

Bakers Keyboard LoungeWhen it comes to great Jazz Clubs, no finer exponent exists than the intimate environs of Baker’s Keyboard Lounge, located on Livonia and 8-Mile in Detroit. Run by Clarence Baker for 62 years until his passing 2003, Baker brought a ‘who’s who’ of legendary jazz greats to his club, including the likes of Billie Holiday, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Dizzy Gillespie, Nat King Cole, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald and Chick Corea.

Due to declining health and the many demands it requires to run a successful jazz club, Baker sold his world-famous lounge in 1996 to ex-bar owner Juanita Jackson and her partner, John Colbert.

For the past 13 years they have continued the tradition of keeping jazz alive at Bakers, and from May 1st through May 4th you can celebrate Baker’s 75th Anniversary with a series of special events and performances with Tony Franks and Company on May 1st; The Dan Cray Trio with special guest Kirsten Gustafson on Satuday, May 2nd; Johnny Trudell & Friends on Sunday May 3rd, and the 75th Anniversary blow-out on Monday, May 4th with the Claude Black Trio – the original Baker’s House Band – at 6 PM.
